The Building Science Technologist is a key junior member of the teams that provide a wide variety of engineering and management services such as:

  • Depreciation reports
  • Rehabilitation & new construction design and drafting, field reviews, and field testing
  • Graphically rich research and guidelines
  • Building enclosure condition assessments

Working in the Courtenay office will necessitate working on a range of projects and tasks, as well as working collaboratively with other offices at RDH. The following are examples of the types of tasks that will be performed by the Building Science Technologist.

  • Complete Depreciation Reports, including conducting visual review of the building exterior and interior components, evaluating existing conditions; liaising with owners’ representatives; reviewing drawings and documents; performing quantity take-offs; contribute to developing maintenance and renewals plans and final reports.
  • Assist with Rehabilitation & New Construction Projects, including reviewing and creating detail drawings, with particular focus on their performance with respect to water, vapor, and air; conduct site reviews during construction; prepare site visit reports documenting observations and field-testing results.
  • Support senior staff to prepare concept and working drawings for existing building renewal projects. Design documentation and communication deliverables may include design reports, sketches, CAD drawings, graphics, and photography.
  • Assist with creation of project specifications, including acceptable product materials, material delivery to site, site storage of material, quality assurance of work, installation procedures, protection of finished work, etc.
  • Prepare graphic design elements and technical content for building science research reports, guides and technical documents.
  • Assist with Building Enclosure Condition Assessments, including conducting visual reviews; creating exploratory openings to understand the underlying components for evidence of decay/deterioration; field testing; report writing and meeting with owners.
  • Assist other senior technical staff with a range of projects, including maintenance and planning tasks, building enclosure condition assessments, site investigations, energy and sustainability, and research projects.


  • Diploma in Building Science Engineering Technology, Architectural Building Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology; or equivalent practical experience (1-2 years)


  • Some technical knowledge of building enclosure design and construction principles
  • Graphic design skills including proficiency with various software tools including familiarity with or willingness to learn AutoCAD, Rhino, Adobe Suite, SketchUp, and Revit
  • Able to conceptualize details in three dimensions
  • Intermediate Microsoft Word and Excel skills
  • Intermediate report writing and proofreading skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Good ability to communicate with clients, trades, employees, project managers, and management
  • Good ability to shift focus between changing priorities
  • Strong desire to learn within the field of building science
  • Awareness of climate change mitigation and adaptation as they relate to building performancE


  • Drivers license in good standing
  • Car to travel to projects around Vancouver Island
