The result was a collaborative project that combined CHBA BC’s in-house course development expertise with RDH’s instructional design and building science knowledge. The three 2-hour courses form the foundation of CHBA BC’s new Building Science Fundamentals curriculum:
- Water Management in High-Performance Building Enclosures for New Homes
- Airtightness in High-Performance Building Enclosures for New Homes
- Thermal Control in High-Performance Building Enclosures for New Homes
Rather than following a typical design-and-delivery model, CHBA BC and RDH opted for a collaborative process that leveraged the timely availability of each team. While they would build and publish the e-Learning courses internally, RDH was tasked with developing the complete instructional design and providing detailed technical course materials to support their work in Articulate Storyline.
The development of an e-learning course typically consists of six phases. For this project, RDH was contracted to complete four of these phases to support the client.
Phase One involved leveraging the existing content from the RDH-authored textbook to generate a course outline for all three courses, including identifying multimedia assets.
Upon client approval of the course outline, Phase Two saw RDH design the courses using an RDH Training & Publications Detailed Design Document, commonly used in T&P e-learning projects. This document included scripts for narrations, suggested interactions to engage learners, on-slide content, quiz questions, and a compilation of media assets.
In Phase Three, RDH developed media assets, including illustrations and images, and recorded interview-style podcasts hosted by and featuring RDH technical field review and design specialists local to British Columbia.
Phase Four was managed by CHBA BC, who used the Detailed Design Document, course outline, and the media assets produced by RDH to develop the e-learning course in Articulate Storyline. Once the course was created, the client shared a link with RDH for both instructional design and technical review.
RDH completed Phase Five by providing a thorough instructional design review within Articulate Review. Our review assessed the learner experience, the accuracy of the course to the design document, and the overall instructional design methods employed during development. Additionally, RDH provided a technical review of the content to ensure it aligned with the textbook and emphasized that the course goals were relevant to the new builders’ building enclosure education needs.
Phase Six was executed by the client, who updated the courses using RDH’s feedback to finalize and publish the courses for distribution on their learning management system.
