As part of this effort, RDH is leading the design of two major enclosure retrofit projects tailored to the unique challenges of remote northern construction.
The first project involves a deep energy retrofit of four square-log homes. RDH undertook design development of exterior energy retrofit assemblies that preserve the log structure while improving airtightness, thermal performance, and durability. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring.
The second project expands the retrofit effort to twelve additional homes representing four typical archetypes. RDH developed a comprehensive Basis of Design report and enclosure strategy for each archetype, focused on high-performance, low-carbon assemblies that are practical to implement in a fly-in community. The design framework includes options for phased construction, off-site prefabrication, and panelized systems to help improve housing conditions while supporting the community’s long-term climate goals. RDH will also be providing training for local citizens/VGFN employees in high-performance construction practices.
