Course Summary
Delivered in collaboration with NB Power, this introductory, half-day in-person training session is designed to prepare building professionals for the new NECB 2020 airtightness testing requirements. Understanding these fundamentals is essential for professionals seeking Chapter 8 compliance through demonstrated air leakage control.
The objective of this session is to provide a clear, practical overview of airtightness, enabling participants to navigate new project requirements from design through construction. You will leave with a foundational understanding of airtight building design and construction, how airtightness testing works (including key principles and procedures), and what is involved in planning and executing a successful airtightness test.
This course includes practical case studies relevant to Part 3 buildings. By attending, you will gain the practical knowledge needed to support your project team, reduce risk, contribute to energy-efficient building outcomes, and plan for airtightness early in your next project.
Course Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, trainees will be able to:
- Describe why airtightness is important.
- Identify the NECB 2020 requirements related to building airtightness.
- Explain design and construction practices that contribute to an airtight building enclosure,
- Identify the key planning and execution requirements of a compliant airtightness test.
- Describe the general process of preparing for and performing an airtightness test.

Designers, contractors, builders, and whole building airtightness testing service providers.
Prerequisites
It is recommended, but not required, that trainees have a fundamental understanding of building airtightness, including air barrier system properties and design.
About the Presenter
David Stanton | MASc., P.Eng.
RDH Associate and Senior Engineer
David is a Senior Engineer and Associate at RDH with extensive experience delivering building enclosure services across North America. An expert in air leakage testing, enclosure performance evaluation, and field review, he has led airtightness testing on numerous projects and specializes in modular and panelized construction, mass timber, and prefabricated façade systems.
David leads RDH’s airtightness testing services and serves as a technical resource for project teams across the firm, supporting high-performance projects including Passive House, Net-Zero Energy, and large-scale developments targeting TGS v3, CAGBC Zero Carbon, and other certifications. His research in airtightness modeling informs his energy and carbon consulting, and he regularly shares his expertise through industry presentations, training, and publications.
