Course Catalog Building Science Principles to Practice

Part 1: Introduction to Building Science

This course provides trainees with a comprehensive introduction to the principles and applications of building science with a focus on high-performance building enclosures. Through an exploration of enclosure requirements, core functions, and the evolution of design strategies, trainees will develop a deeper technical understanding of how buildings are influenced by their indoor and outdoor environments. During this course, trainees will learn common building enclosure components and control layers, gaining insight into insulation systems, structural detailing, and the “perfect wall” concept.

The course emphasizes a holistic approach to design, equipping local design professionals with the knowledge to address modern construction challenges and improve the durability, energy efficiency, and resilience of their projects.

This course is Part 1 of the Building Science Principles to Practice series:

What you’ll learn

  1. Explain the key principles of building science and justify its importance for professionals involved in building design, construction, and operation.
  2. List the four primary building control layers according to their significance in building performance.
  3. Describe examples of high-performance building enclosure assemblies and their suitability for local climate zones.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the current local codes and standards influencing the design of building enclosure systems.

Every building tells a story about how it will perform, how long it will last, and how comfortable it will be for its occupants; understanding that story starts with building science fundamentals. This multi-part course series is an interactive learning experience that equips AEC professionals with a practical understanding of heat, air, and moisture management in the building enclosure grounded in local climate, code requirements, and real-world construction realities.
