The Façade Structural Engineer (EIT) role will primarily involve engineering design and field review for façade structural projects. Your role will include reviewing the implementation of work on site as well as assisting with design, analysis, and construction documentation. This work will focus on assessing and determining solutions for our clients in ensuring excellent façade structural performance on a variety of glazing systems. This role requires versatility, and may also include involvement with new construction, existing buildings, Building Science Labs, and energy efficiency projects as the need arises.

As part of the project work, you will be involved with projects to help ensure that our

work meets or exceeds the client’s expectations, while also meeting the project budgets and other objectives. In some cases, depending on the size of the project, you will act as the project coordinator, where you communicate directly with the client, and be responsible for moving the project forward, responding to requests, getting input from more senior staff and generally making sure that the project is on track.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate with the project lead, responding to requests, getting input from more senior staff and generally making sure that the project is on track.
  • Assist project managers as needed with the review of worksheets, invoicing, and correspondence with the clients.
  • Structural design of glazing systems and other cladding systems for commercial/residential construction
  • Field Review of fabrication and installation at project sites, with corresponding reports
  • Prepare engineering calculations and detailed designs; discuss project requirements and solutions with Senior Engineers and Clients
  • Investigation of glazing system performance problems in the field
  • Oversight of drawing preparation for fenestration systems
  • Liaise with clients, other consultants, contractors, building officials and suppliers as required
  • Review architectural and structural drawings to become familiar with the overall building design intent including structural design of glazing systems and metal cladding for commercial/residential construction.
  • Review any other documentation, including maintenance records, targeted repair documents, and previous reports by other consultant/professionals.
  • Prepare written reports as required
  • Other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applied science from an accredited university.
  • Some direct building façade (enclosure) related experience an asset
  • Project coordination experience an asset
  • Practical field experience in construction an asset
  • Eligibility for EIT registration required, with intent to become registered P.Eng.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Basic technical knowledge of building façade (enclosure) design and construction principles
  • Knowledge of building science principles
  • Structural engineering analysis and design skills utilizing aluminum and glass, as well as knowledge of traditional primary structural design utilizing steel, concrete and wood preferred
  • Familiarity with drawings and specifications
  • Excellent skills with Microsoft Office Suite of products
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent ability to shift focus between changing priorities and effectively contribute to multiple projects while meeting all deadlines
