Owens Corning Canada turned to RDH for guidance on a targeted challenge: creating a clear, practical resource to help industry professionals select the optimal direct strapping method, which involves using long screws through vertical strapping, when installing their mineral wool insulation products.

With our Training & Publications team and building science , RDH delivered a comprehensive, branded technical guide tailored specifically to Owens Corning’s ThermaFiber RainBarrier product. Our start-to-end approach encompassed all key research and development phases, combining technical knowledge with clear communication to meet Owens Corning’s goals.

Verifying the Need for Product-Specific Testing

By reviewing the available industry literature on mineral wool insulation and direct strapping attachments, our building scientists verified that product-specific laboratory testing was needed to present a robust solution.

Evaluating the System in the Lab

Our laboratory specialists conducted load-deflection tests to investigate the structural performance of long-screw strapping attachments through Owens Corning’s ThermaFiber RainBarrier mineral wool when used as exterior continuous insulation. To inform fastener design guidance, we simulated loading in the lab to create a series of load deflection curves that engineers can use to build specific designs.

Engineering a Solution

Leveraging the testing results, our engineering team developed a fully engineered, product-specific example solution. This solution is detailed in the published guide, which includes comprehensive fastener guidance tables for both wood and steel-stud framing.

Devising a Step-by-Step Design Pathway

To make the solution accessible for a wide range of projects, we structured the guide into a clear five-step design pathway. This approach leads users through selecting the right Owens Corning product to support the design, specification, and installation of an exterior insulated wall system. The guide addresses essential factors, including thermal performance, air and water control, fire resistance, acoustics, and sustainability goals. Additionally, our team conducted a peer review of the guide’s French translation to maintain quality and accuracy.

Supporting Client Implementation Through Training

To promote adoption and effective use of the guide, we facilitated a 1.5-hour virtual training session attended by Owens Corning’s technical and sales teams across Canada. This training reviewed the goals of the resource and its core content, including background commentary on technical research and calculation details that led to the included example solutions.
