In 2019, Seattle voters approved a Library Levy that funded a major renovation to improve safety, accessibility, and resilience while preserving the branch’s historic character. The renovation scope included a seismic retrofit of the primary structure, installation of an all-electric HVAC system with air conditioning, accessibility upgrades, interior modernization, and other building-system improvements.
As part of the renovation team led by BuildingWork, RDH provided building enclosure consulting from early assessment through construction in a design-assist role. We investigated existing performance and developed recommendations for enclosure areas directly affected by the seismic retrofit, focusing on the interfaces between new structural elements and the existing exterior walls and windows. RDH Seattle’s work included review of targeted disassembly and detailing of the north and east wall assemblies, window removal and rehabilitation, partial roof upgrades, and localized below-grade waterproofing.
During construction, RDH performed field review to confirm enclosure performance and prepared closeout documentation to support ongoing operations and future capital planning. With a preservation-led design approach, the project delivered a safer, more accessible, and climate-ready facility that maintains its historic character and serves the Green Lake community as a civic resource for generations to come.
