Resurrected after a tragic fire in 2014, the Yasodhara Ashram Temple of Light is a breathtaking structure situated on the shores of Kootenay Lake in British Columbia. Inspired by the form of a lotus flower, the temple features eight petal-shaped panels and expansive windows that flood the interior yoga space with natural light and serenity.

The building’s intricate shape presented significant challenges in both design and construction. Each wooden petal was prefabricated near Nelson, BC, and then transported to the site, where it was installed atop engineered trusses to form the dramatic interior roof structure.

We served as the Building Enclosure Consultant as part of a team led by Patkau Architects. Our role included reviewing the design intent, advising on material selection, and collaborating with the team to develop practical, buildable solutions that aligned with the architectural vision.

Completed in 2018, the Temple of Light now stands as a striking architectural centerpiece and a cherished gathering space for the Yasodhara Ashram community.
