Wildfire Resistant Construction: Technical Sheet Series

Building Enclosure Consulting Multiple Climates

The Wildfire Resistant Construction (WFRC) Technical Sheet Series provides construction information and specifications for buildings located in wildfire zones. This information is intended to reduce the risk of damage to both new and existing buildings that experience wildfires. The series includes five technical sheets covering fundamental concepts, exterior wall assemblies, windows, doors, and roof assemblies.

This series was developed in response to the devastating June 2021 wildfires that swept through the Village of Lytton, BC. The Government of Canada is supporting the Lytton community to rebuild homes that are both wildfire-resistant and net-zero energy through PacifiCan’s Lytton Resilient Rebuild Program. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has been working with local builders on the Lytton rebuilding efforts, and this work revealed the need for guidance documents to support wildfire-resistant construction. RDH developed the WFRC Technical Sheet Series for NRCan in support of their efforts in Lytton and other wildfire zones.

The WFRC Technical Sheet Series is in draft format. RDH is currently testing the buildability of the proposed wildfire-resistant measures. NRCan released this draft technical sheet series to support the urgent need for information on construction in wildfire zones.
