The Art Gallery of Ontarioʼs new Dani Reiss Modern and Contemporary Gallery is an all-electric expansion targeting Zero Carbon Building Design Standard v3 certification. No combustion-based systems are used for heating or cooling, reflecting the AGOʼs commitment to climate action and sustainable design.

RDH is providing building enclosure consulting and zero-carbon design support, with a focus on high-performance enclosure detailing aligned with Passive House principles. We are collaborating closely with the design team to integrate thermal control, air barrier continuity, and glazing performance into the gallery’s distinctive form.

This project achieved an impressive 32% reduction in embodied carbon from the design development stage to the issuance of construction documents. This exceeds the Zero Carbon Building Design Standard v3 minimum target of a 10% reduction from a reference baseline. The challenge in reducing embodied carbon on this project was the use of high-carbon materials such as structural steel beams and composite concrete and steel decking. The significant decrease is primarily attributed to specifying low embodied carbon terra cotta cladding, which was another high-impact material. The low embodied carbon terra cotta specified is 61% lower embodied carbon impact than the typical terra cotta product. Additionally, through smart structural design, the amount of concrete used on the project was reduced by incorporating alternative materials where possible. Lastly, electric arc furnace steel was specified for the project to reduce steel impacts further.

This project advances low-carbon design in a complex building where ventilation, humidity control, and preservation typically drive high energy demand. RDH’s enclosure and zero-carbon design work support a resilient, high-performance solution that protects the artwork and elevates the visitor experience.
